A Victoria woman went out on her porch at 6 a.m.
this morning to feed her cats, looked up, and
got the surprise of her life. “There was this
great big evil eye staring at me down from the
sky,” said Mrs. R. Desureau, 28 Douglas Street.
“It was a big ball of fire with orange and
yellow streaks coming out of the sides and back.
I saw it first over Beacon Hill Park. Then it
moved east towards Seattle. I watched it with
field glasses. It got smaller and smaller. In a
few minutes it was gone. When I wake up I’m wide
awake, so I’m sure of what I saw. Once I saw
Jupiter but never anything like this. At first
it was real scary – like right across the
street. After all, you know what they say, what
goes up has to come down.”
Spokesmen of the Dominion Astrophysical
Observatory and the Victoria Airport weather
office did not confirm Mrs. Desureau’s early
morning sighting, but they said she might have
seen a meteor. A meteor is a piece of stony
matter hurled into the earth’s atmosphere from
space. Meteors usually burn up before actually
falling to earth.
