ROSSLAND – (CP) – An amateur astronomist here says Kootenay residents may not have seen Russia’s earth satellite Sputnik.

R. D. McAllister believes it was the planet Venus, “the evening star”, that persons thought was the satellite.

“Any object that can be viewed for five minutes in one part of the sky is certainly not Sputnik. At 18,000 miles an hour it would cross the horizon in less than five minutes,” he said.
