In October, 1957, I and a friend,
Herb Christie (both age 18) attempted to climb
Mt. Fisher (9,245 feet) in the main chain of
the Rockies. We became stranded about a
hundred yards from the summit. Somehow we
inched down the cliffs, just as night fell. It
was a clear night, and the moon was out. Upon
reaching the rock-slide at the foot of the
cliffs, we sat down to rest. I noticed an
unusually large and reddish “star” above the
horizon, and brought it to the attention of my
companion. A few minutes afterward, it began
to move, slowly at first, then with increasing
speed, dropping at a 45° angle behind the
horizon. There appeared a red glow where it
dropped.
