WASHINGTON (AP) — Civil Aeronautics Board said Thursday
the jet airliner that crashed near Miami Feb. 12 encountered a force three
times that of gravity during its last 40 seconds of flight.
The board said the automatic flight recorder, recovered from the wreckage,
showed the flight lasted only 13 minutes from take-off from Miami
International Airport.
Investigators have said there was extremely rough weather in the area at the
time. All 43 persons aboard the Chicago-bound Northwest Airlines Boeing 720-B
were killed.
Forces of the extent indicated are said by experts to be sufficient to cause
the wings to buckle. The wreckage was found spread over a dozen miles of the
Everglades, 30 miles southwest of Miami.
